    1. It freezes okay, but the texture will be a bit different (less smooth) after freezing. If you can, thaw and then blend it until smooth after freezing.

  1. I just tried this gravy for the first time and made hamburger gravy over mashed potatos with it–using plant based hamburger crumbles. Remember that from the school cafeteria of your youth? Wow, it was very good and took us back 50 years!

  3. I haven’t yet made this, but I’m excited! I was curious if anyone has tried it with chickpea flour instead of all purpose or rice flour. I try to avoid rice (especially for my son) because of the arsenic levels.

    Thanks!

    1. I don’t use any particular brand to be honest. I often have a cheap store brand and I like it. I guess it’s a matter of taste; you might have to taste a few to find what you like.

  4. Hi, Is that powdered mustard or the Dijon mustard in the jar that you put on sandwiches? Thank you, look forward to trying this recipe.

  5. I made this to cook some seitan in and served with some roasted Brussels sprouts and carrots 🥕. I wished I had some mashed potatoes 🥔! Oh well, I’ll make some next time. Thanks 🙏 for sharing your recipe with us! It’s so delicious and easy to make.

    1. You are welcome, Julie! I’m so glad that you and your family are loving the gravy recipe! Thank you for sharing your stellar review!

  7. This came out good.
I didn’t have any onion powder but I have Taco Seasoning, I had all the other ingredients so I just used the Taco Seasoning, I also added a pat of Vegan Butter.
Had it for dinner with mash potatoes and a spicy black bean burger patty.
I want to try it on some Vegetarian meatloaf.

  8. This gravy recipe is the absolute best! No other recipe is needed. It’s quick, easy, tastes fantastic. It may be my new fav beverage!

    1. Hi Linda. I’m glad you loved the gravy recipe! This is the first time I’ve ever heard it referred to as a beverage! Thank you for sharing your stellar review and feedback! Wishing you happy cooking!

  9. This is my FAVORITE brown gravy recipe on the internet! The Dijon is the secret ingredient! Thank you for ALL of your awesome simple, clear, and VEGAN recipes. I LOVE them all (but this is one of my go-to favs).

  10. Wow!!! This is so good and comes together quickly! I don’t need to buy the gravy mixes anymore! I needed to make gravy in a pinch so I substituted in the same quantities: umami mushroom powder (someone mentioned the same idea above) for nutritional yeast, a grainier mustard (it was all I had on hand) for Dijon, and then cornstarch for APF (ok sorry – seems like I had some big substitutes – but this is all I had on hand). It turned out a little more gelatinous b/c I used corn starch so I had to dilute it, but otherwise the flavour was perfect. 🤩 I will make this again and again! Also super vegan friendly! Life changing !!

  11. This recipe looks amazing and is so handy considering I don’t have butter. However, I realized there’s no nutritional yeast on hand. Do you think umami mushroom powder would work as a substitute? Any recommendations are appreciated!

    1. This is a well loved recipe, and I think you will enjoy it! You can make it without the nutritional yeast. The flavor should be still be great! It would probably be quite delicious with the mushroom powder! Enjoy!

      1. I’m about to try this recipe.
I have used a different recipe that called for umani mushroom seasoning as a main ingredient. I didn’t have that so I substituted nutritional yeast as I have plenty of that as I use it for many things.
The recipe worked just fine and tasted wonderful.
So I think the answer to your question is yes!
        Enjoy

        1. Hi Sven. I’m so glad to hear that you love the recipe! Thank you for sharing your wonderful feedback!

  12. I really would like to make this gravy. But I noticed there is mustard in it. We do not use mustard at all. Can you recommend something different? Can I use Turmeric instead? Would that help the flavor? Let me know what you think Nora. Bu the way my Grandma’s name was Nora! I have not heard the name very often. Thanks for your wonderful recipes!

    1. You can simply leave it out, no problem! I’ve done this before and it still tastes incredible. And that’s neat your grandma’s name was Nora, I have met very few in my life, but I think it’s making a bit of a comeback!

  13. No fat, low carb, low protein — Nora’s vegan gravy recipe is awsome! We put it on pretty much everything 😂!

  14. I have made this gravy many times, it’s delicious and we love it! Today I added about 2 tsp of sriracha sauce and oh my, takes it to another level! I love how versatile this is, thanks 😊
