How to survive your first Thanksgiving as a vegan or vegetarian

Going to your first Thanksgiving dinner as a vegetarian or vegan isn’t easy! There are so many factors to navigate, like what you’re going to eat and the questions your family will undoubtedly ask. Start preparing and use this list of tips to help you get by:

  • Make a few dishes yourself and bring them to dinner so you know you’ll have some delicious food to eat.
  • If you want to share with others, veganize a few of the classics, like scalloped potatoes or sweet potato casserole. This will make it harder for people to turn up their noses.
  • Be present and thankful, even if your plate isn’t totally full. This is just the beginning and it’s only going to get better from here!

What’s a good replacement for turkey at Thanksgiving?

The best replacement for turkey at Thanksgiving is, hands down, my homemade Vegan Turkey Roast. It’s a meaty seitan “turkey” seasoned with no-chicken broth and classic poultry seasonings to help it taste like the real thing. Other meaty mains you can make from scratch are my Vegan Ham Roast, this Vegan Wellington, my Vegan Chicken, or this wholesome Lentil Loaf.

There are many brands of store-bought vegan turkeys to choose from, too, like Tofurkey, Gardein, Field Roast, and more. You should see a few different options pop up in well-stocked grocery stores around Thanksgiving.
