Is vegan food gluten-free?
Some vegan foods, like fruits and vegetables, are inherently gluten-free; however, just because a food item is vegan-friendly does not mean it will also be gluten-free.
Foods processed with wheat products, like bread, cereal, some oats, and certain baked goods, will not be gluten-free. Seitan, a staple vegan meat substitute, is made from vital wheat gluten and cannot be made gluten-free.
But just because these ingredients are not vegan AND gluten-free doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to eat!
Making delicious meals and desserts for those who follow a vegan and gluten-free diet can be done with simple substitutions. For example, almond flour is a popular substitute for all-purpose flour in vegan baked goods, like these Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookies.
And don’t discount tofu or soy curls as your plant proteins of choice! Both are naturally gluten-free and easy to dress up with endless sauces, marinades, and seasonings.
